Both are badly deteriorated and in need of conservation, but the main carvings are still visible.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_462\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csysi.co.uk\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1-slab.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-462\" class=\"wp-image-462\" src=\"http:\/\/www.csysi.co.uk\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1-slab.jpg\" alt=\"grave-slab-1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.clanmaciain.com\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1-slab.jpg 1350w, http:\/\/www.clanmaciain.com\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1-slab-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.clanmaciain.com\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/1-slab-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The larger of the two grave slabs in St Comghan&#8217;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the larger of the two, a berlinn, one of the symbols of the MacIains, at the left end of the slab, is set above some figures which have been described as a &#8216;hunting scene&#8217;. \u00a0To the right isa claymore (claidheamh m\u00f2r, &#8220;great sword&#8221; in Gaelic), the Scottish variant of the late medieval two-handed longsword. The characteristic cross hilt with downward-sloping &#8216;quillons&#8217; is visible.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_463\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csysi.co.uk\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2-slab.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-463\" class=\"wp-image-463\" src=\"http:\/\/www.csysi.co.uk\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2-slab.jpg\" alt=\"grave-slab-2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.clanmaciain.com\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2-slab.jpg 1350w, http:\/\/www.clanmaciain.com\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2-slab-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.clanmaciain.com\/maciain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2-slab-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The second, smaller grave slab in St Comghan&#8217;s churchyard.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The smaller has\u00a0the claymore pointing down to\u00a0the berlinn, at right.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the\u00a0Iona\u00a0grave slabs have writing around the edge, and both these slabs have space there, but their condition is such that, if writing there is, it cannot be read.<\/p>\n<p>There is some question as to whether these grave-slabs were originally in St Comghan&#8217;s graveyard or whether they were stolen from Iona and placed there. The Iona Abbey and Clan Donald website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ionaabbeyandclandonald.com\/uploads\/1\/4\/3\/2\/14329824\/other_noteable_clan_donald_inscibed_monuments_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, tells the story of Mac Iain Ghiorr (1624-94) whose name was proverbial in the West Highlands as a master thief. He was of the \u201cMacdonald\u2019s of Mingarry\u201d in Ardnamurchan, \u201cone of the MacIains of Ardnamurchan, a persecuted race\u201d and \u201d &#8230; his new property was Grigadale near Ardnamurchan Point.\u201d The story tells that he brought the two sculptured slabs from Iona to mark his parent\u2019s grave at Kilchoan.<\/p>\n<p>The grave slab of John MacIain, who was killed with his two sons at the battle of Creag an Airgid in 1518, is in the Iona Abbey museum. \u00a0A picture of the slab\u00a0is on the CANMORE site, <a href=\"http:\/\/canmore.rcahms.gov.uk\/en\/details\/373634\/\">here<\/a>. It, too, has a berlinn on it, and the slab is of particular interest because it shows what is probably John in two forms of armour, the one on the right being of the type he would have worn in the Highlands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Above the village of Kilchoan stands the ruins of St Comghan&#8217;s Church, once the parish church of Ardnamurchan.
