Heather on the Hills

Heather on the hills above Ormsaigbeg

By early August all three of the local heather varieties – ling, bell and cross-leaved – are in flower, and the hills of Ardnamurchan are alight with their colour.

This view looks across the marshland at the back of Kilchoan Bay to the township of Ormsaigbeg.  The heather is growing on the ridge called Druim na Gearr Leacainn, and most of it is ling, Calluna vulgaris, the last to flower, which is a lilac colour.
